Intermittent fasting has gained popularity among millennials as a go-to method for weight loss, but its benefits extend beyond shedding pounds. A recent study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism suggests that intermittent fasting may hold the key to reversing type 2 diabetes.
This fasting approach involves abstaining from food for specific hours each day or consuming only one meal on selected days, triggering the body to burn fat. The research indicates that intermittent fasting not only reduces the risk of diabetes and heart disease but also shows potential for diabetes reversal.
The study involved a 3-month intermittent fasting diet intervention with 36 participants diagnosed with diabetes. Remarkably, nearly 90% of the participants, including those on blood sugar-lowering medications and insulin, were able to reduce their diabetes medication intake after practicing intermittent fasting. Additionally, 55% of these individuals experienced diabetes remission, successfully discontinuing their diabetes medication while maintaining positive outcomes. These findings open new possibilities for managing and potentially reversing type 2 diabetes through the practice of intermittent fasting.
