Bihar: Vigilance team arrests govt employee over bribery charges

Patna, May 20 (IANS) A major anti-corruption operation was conducted in the Naubatpur block area of Patna, where a team from the Vigilance Investigation Bureau arrested a computer operator allegedly while accepting a bribe of Rs 37,100.

The accused, Santosh Kumar, was posted at the Child Development Project Office.

The operation was led by Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Vigilance Investigation Bureau, Sujit Sagar.

According to an official, the case originated from a complaint filed by Sushila Devi, who alleged that the accused had been repeatedly demanding money in exchange for processing departmental work and clearing official files.

After receiving the written complaint, the Vigilance Department conducted a preliminary verification inquiry, during which the allegations were substantiated.

Following this, a special trap team was formed under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Sujit Sagar.

On Wednesday, as part of the planned operation, Sushila Devi handed over the agreed bribe amount to Santosh Kumar.

Vigilance officials, who were stationed nearby in plainclothes, immediately intervened and caught the accused red-handed.

The entire amount of Rs 37,100 was recovered from his possession at the spot.

Following the arrest, the accused was taken into custody, and legal proceedings were initiated under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Officials stated that further investigation into the matter is underway.

The accused will be produced in the special vigilance court in Patna on Thursday.

This was the second bribery-related case in Bihar on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the Vigilance Investigation Bureau carried out a major anti-corruption operation in Saharsa, arresting a revenue employee and his alleged middleman while they allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 16,000.

The accused have been identified as Shyam Prasad Singh and Phulchand Sah.

According to an official of the Vigilance Investigation Bureau, they were caught red-handed during an operation conducted by a vigilance team that arrived from Patna.

The operation was launched following a written complaint filed by Mohammad Hayat, who alleged that a bribe was being demanded in exchange for issuing a land revenue receipt.

The complaint stated that the revenue employee had refused to perform the official work unless the illegal payment was made.
