Egyptian Foreign Minister Urges Gaza Ceasefire Ahead of Ramadan
Ankara: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has issued a plea for a ceasefire in Gaza before the onset of the holy month of Ramadan, slated to commence around March 11 this year. Speaking during his attendance at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in southern Turkey, Shoukry stressed the imperative nature of achieving peace before Ramadan, citing both the security concerns for Palestinians and the sacred significance of the month.
In an interview with the semi-official Anadolu Agency on Friday, Shoukry highlighted the potential ramifications of military actions during Ramadan, warning of the adverse effects on civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as the broader Arab and Muslim world. He underscored the need for a ceasefire to prevent further escalation and to foster a more stable environment during this important period.
“We are working on this, and we will continue to make every effort. We hope for the necessary flexibility and understanding in ending dangers and hostilities,” Shoukry stated, reaffirming Cairo’s commitment to facilitating negotiations for a swift cessation of violence.
Shoukry also dismissed proposals that would allow Israel to conduct military operations while purportedly ensuring civilian safety, deeming such plans inappropriate in the current context of conflict.
The ongoing Antalya Diplomacy Forum, which has drawn representatives from 147 countries worldwide, serves as a platform for dialogue and collaboration on pressing global issues. With nearly 4,500 participants, including heads of state, ministers, and international representatives, this year’s forum underscores the international community’s commitment to diplomatic engagement and conflict resolution.
