Washington: Former US President Donald Trump secured victory in Missouri’s Republican presidential caucus on Saturday, further solidifying his path towards clinching the GOP nomination. Trump’s win over former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, underscores his continued popularity within the party.
This success in Missouri adds to Trump’s previous victories in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, demonstrating his widespread support among Republican voters. Additionally, Trump emerged victorious in Michigan’s Republican primary earlier in the week, capturing over 68% of the vote.
During a Republican convention on Saturday, Trump garnered additional delegates, strengthening his position in the northern state. With over 100 delegates already secured, Trump aims to reach a minimum of 1,215 delegates to secure the Republican presidential nomination.
As Super Tuesday approaches on March 5, when a significant number of delegates are typically allocated, the race intensifies. Nearly one-third of all delegates to the Republican and Democratic conventions are typically distributed on this pivotal day, involving voting in 15 states and one territory.
Meanwhile, Trump’s legal battles regarding the 2020 election outcome continue, with the US Supreme Court agreeing to consider his claim of immunity from prosecution as he challenges the election results. These legal proceedings coincide with Trump’s campaigning efforts as he seeks a return to the presidency.
The ongoing presidential primaries, extending until June, lead up to the Republican National Convention in July, where the party’s nominee will be formally selected by delegates. The Democratic National Convention follows in August, with the 2024 Election Day set for November 5.
