NDA legislators condemn Manipur killing, urge immediate arrest of culprits

Imphal, Oct 19 (IANS) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday chaired a meeting with legislators of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and discussed the prevailing law and order situation in the state, officials said.

A post on the X handle of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said: “Chief Minister Shri Yumnam Khemchand Singh today chaired a meeting of NDA legislators at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.” “The legislators unanimously condemned, in the strongest terms, the unfortunate incident that occurred in Imphal East today. They also directed the police and security forces to apprehend the perpetrators of the crime immediately,” the post said.

The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the killing of four people, injuries to several others and reports of three people missing in separate incidents in Manipur’s Imphal East and Thoubal districts over the past 24 hours. The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and the Naga People’s Front (NPF) are among the constituents of the BJP-led NDA in Manipur.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh also held a separate meeting with representatives of a Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the killing of Laishram Rakesh Singh. Taking to X, the Chief Minister wrote: “Met the representatives of the Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Killing of Laishram Rakesh Singh of Khangabok Part-II, Mayai Leikai, led by Convenor Shri L. Kiran, at my Secretariat, Babupara, today.”

“They submitted a memorandum regarding the case, raising their genuine concerns. I have assured them that their demands will be looked into and appropriate action will be taken as per law,” he said.

In another engagement on Monday, the Chief Minister met a delegation of the Global Traditional Taekwondo Federation (GTTF) and a Taekwondo team from the Republic of Korea at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

An official of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that during the meeting, the Chief Minister and the visiting delegates exchanged gifts and traditional shawls, known as Lengyan in Manipur. A total of 31 delegates, led by GTTF President Jun Lee, met the Chief Minister during the visit. The delegation included Hwang Kyung-Seon, an Olympic gold medallist in Taekwondo.

Chief Minister Khemchand Singh is himself a lifelong Taekwondo practitioner and master, and the meeting also highlighted the sporting and cultural links between Manipur and the Republic of Korea.
