Jaishankar meets Canadian counterpart, raises issue of Indian diplomats’ security

Jakarta: During the ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting in Jakarta, Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar held a meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Joly, where he raised concerns regarding the security of Indian diplomats. Jaishankar took to Twitter to share about the meeting, stating that they discussed the Indo-Pacific region and their economic cooperation. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Indian diplomats and the need to combat incitement to violence firmly.

The meeting between the two leaders occurred shortly after Khalistani elements displayed posters in Canada, featuring photographs of the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats, along with messages holding them responsible for the killing of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The posters also contained death threats against the Indian diplomats.

In June, India had summoned the Canadian High Commissioner and lodged a protest regarding the matter. Earlier, Jaishankar had commented that Canada’s tolerance of separatist elements might be driven by “votebank politics.”
