New Delhi: A delegation of 20 MPs from the Indian National Congress is scheduled to visit Manipur with the primary objective of meeting with the victim families and individuals taking refuge in relief camps in the northeastern state. The aim of this visit is to gain a first-hand understanding of the situation on the ground.
The ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament has witnessed considerable agitation over the situation in Manipur, with opposition parties demanding a detailed statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a discussion on the Manipur issue in both Houses of Parliament.
Taking further action, the Congress-led INDIA bloc has moved a no confidence motion in the Lok Sabha specifically concerning the situation in Manipur, reflecting their concerns and stance on the matter.
Manipur has been experiencing ethnic clashes since May 3 of this year, leading to the loss of hundreds of lives and the displacement of thousands, who have sought refuge in relief camps.
Opposition parties have been vocal in their call for the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur and the immediate removal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, holding him accountable for what they perceive as a failure to effectively control the situation.
In the past, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also visited the state, spending two days there. During his visit, he interacted with victim families and residents of the relief camps, and he also engaged in discussions with the Governor, making an appeal for peace in the troubled northeastern state.
