Bengaluru: A distressing incident occurred in Marakal village, located in the Yadgir district of Karnataka, where a 10-month-old baby sustained injuries due to the collapse of an Anganwadi center’s roof. The incident unfolded on Thursday when the baby, accompanied by family members, was present at the Anganwadi center for a vaccination session organized as part of the Indradhanush program.
The Indradhanush program aims to provide crucial vaccinations against eight life-threatening diseases, including diphtheria, whooping cough, and pneumonia caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B.
During the vaccination session, an unexpected mishap occurred when the roof of the center suddenly collapsed, affecting more than six children and parents. Fortunately, they sustained minor injuries, except for 10-month-old baby Keerthi, who was injured in the incident. A heartwarming photograph of the injured baby Keerthi wearing a bandage on her head and still smiling despite her injury went viral on social media platforms in the state. People have shown immense affection and admiration for the baby’s resilience.
Keerthi was promptly admitted to the Shahapur taluk hospital for medical attention. Officials conducted an inspection of the site afterward. The Anganwadi building had been constructed three years ago, and villagers have expressed concerns that the incident was a consequence of substandard construction.
The Yadgir district, where the incident occurred, is recognized as one of the more underdeveloped regions in the state of Karnataka.
