Kolkata, July 28 (IANS) The Kolkata Police are in the process of creating ‘trial monitoring app’ to track the progress of the trial of old cases and speed them up, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.
The police have selected about 360 old cases that are under trial which will be monitored through the app.
Police said that after a crime, there is a process to arrest criminals.
However, more attention is being paid to ensure that the guilty are punished for which a ‘Trial Monitoring Cell’ has been created in the Lalbazar (Kolkata Police headquarters) Intelligence Department.
The branch has selected 360 old cases. Among them, there are also cases that are under the control of the West Bengal Police, but on the orders of the court, the responsibility of that case is now in the hands of the Kolkata Police.
Again, among these selected cases is the Park Street fire incident in 2010. There is also a case of a large number of patients (89) dying in a fire at a private hospital in Dhakuria (2011).
There are important cases of various police stations, which are not yet resolved.
In many of the cases that are under trial, the Investigating Officer has retired or changed. Apart from this, there are problems in giving testimony in many cases.
Witnesses are also not appearing in court on time.
Again, there are many cases, where charges are not being framed because all the accused do not appear in court together before the trial begins.
The trial of many cases is being delayed for various reasons.
Lalbazar has created this special department to speed up the cases.
The officers of the Trial Monitoring Cell are reviewing the reasons for the slow progress of the cases in discussion with the Investigating Officers and government lawyers.
At the same time, the Lalbazar police officers are also giving importance to creating a new ‘Trial Monitoring App’ to speed up the cases.
Sources in Lalbazar said that the new app will contain all the information related to the pending cases.
Just as this app will be on the mobile phones of the police officers of the police station, the Investigating Officers, the officers of the trial monitoring cell, and the officials of the Kolkata Police, it will also be in the hands of the government lawyers and the courts.
The status of each case, how many witnesses have testified, how many testimonies are yet to be taken, how many accused are in custody in the case, how many are out on bail, how many hearings have been held in a case, when is the next date, all this information can be found by opening the app.
