Bushfire Danger Period Commences in Australia’s Most Populated State

The bushfire danger period is now in effect in Australia’s most populated state, as announced by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS). This period typically spans from October 1 to March 31, necessitating residents to obtain fire permits for any planned burning activities on their properties, according to the Xinhua news agency.

This year, the 2023-24 bushfire season commenced officially on October 1, following weeks of unseasonable heatwaves. However, the NSW RFS noted that 32 local government areas in the state had been in the bushfire danger period for at least a month, starting on September 1. Eleven of these areas began earlier than usual due to warm and dry conditions.

As of Wednesday, there are 65 fires burning across NSW, with 12 of them raging out of control. A significant bushfire in the Tenterfield local government area has expanded to 6,349 hectares, posing a threat to homes and properties not only in NSW’s Jennings area but also in the Wallangarra township of Queensland.
