Patna, Aug 27 (IANS) Following the severe flooding and disaster in Nepal, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary visited Valmikinagar on Thursday and inspected the Gandak Barrage along the India-Nepal border.
He also reviewed the condition of the barrage’s various sluice gates and assessed the water level of the Gandak River.
Deputy Chief Minister cum Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary accompanied the Chief Minister during the inspection.
They reached Valmikinagar Barrage by helicopter and also did an aerial survey of the affected areas.
Officials from the Water Resources Department briefed him on the river’s current status, the possible impact of the Nepal floods, and the preparedness measures undertaken by the administration.
Bagaha SDM Chandni Kumari and SP Rajesh Kumar also briefed the Chief Minister on the situation in the border areas.
CM Choudhary directed officials to maintain continuous surveillance of vulnerable locations and remain prepared to respond promptly to any emerging situation.
The Chief Minister said the immediate threat of flooding in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh has been averted for the time being, with the situation gradually returning to normal.
However, considering the scale of the disaster in Nepal, he stressed that heightened vigilance along the border and the Gandak basin remains necessary.
CM Choudhary said the administration has reviewed the situation in Bagaha, Valmikinagar, Bettiah and Motihari, including preparedness, precautionary measures and arrangements for safety, relief and rescue operations.
Officials were instructed to take prompt action wherever required.
The Chief Minister emphasised that safety of citizens and timely relief and assistance remain the government’s top priority.
He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were closely monitoring the situation, including relief and assistance efforts in Nepal.
The administration has been directed to continue monitoring the Gandak River and surrounding vulnerable areas and to ensure that relief and rescue measures can be activated immediately if conditions deteriorate.
