Conversion Incident in UP: 2 Detained for Alleged Involvement in Woman’s Religious Transformation

Kanpur: Initial findings suggest that a woman, the wife of a jeweler residing in Govind Nagar, Kanpur, has purportedly converted to Islam under the influence of two men from Agra. Additionally, she expressed a desire for her husband, father-in-law, and son to embrace the new faith. However, the situation took a turn when members of the Bajrang Dal were alerted to the incident, prompting them to storm the hotel and demand immediate action against the two Agra-based men.

Responding to a formal complaint, the police promptly registered an FIR and took the two men into custody.

Reportedly, the woman, a resident of Govind Nagar, had connected with Chand and Sohail, both 26 years old and hailing from Agra, through a mobile application. Subsequently, she left her home, bringing her minor son and her personal belongings, including jewelry, with her when she converted to Islam.

On a fateful Saturday, she, along with the two aforementioned men, checked into a Kanpur hotel. It was here that she invited her husband and other family members, attempting to persuade them to join her in converting to Islam. However, her husband alerted Krishna Tiwari, the city president of Bajrang Dal, who, in turn, rallied activists from the organization to confront the situation.

The police intervened, arresting Chand and Sohail after formally registering the FIR against them. Nishant Sharma, ACP Collectorganj, stated that the police took action in response to the jeweler’s complaint, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
