Chennai: Possible Appointment of Sasikanth Senthil as Tamil Nadu Congress President Gains Attention. The term of the current Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, K.S. Alagiri, has concluded. Although his faction is pushing for an extension until the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party seems to be considering former IAS officer and politician Sasikanth Senthil for the role.
The TNCC has become divided into three factions: one led by incumbent president Alagiri, another led by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Selvaperuthungai, and the third that supports Sasikanth Senthil.
Sasikanth Senthil, who is not aligned with any faction, has gained support from certain senior Congress leaders in the state. They have informed the All India Congress Committee (AICC) that replacing Alagiri with the dynamic and energetic Senthil could greatly benefit the party in Tamil Nadu. Senthil played a crucial role as an election strategist for the Congress during the Karnataka assembly elections, leading the party to victory over the BJP.
Presently overseeing election activities in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Senthil’s youth and dynamism have prompted many state leaders to favor his leadership for the party in Tamil Nadu.
Insiders within the Congress have revealed that a group of leaders, including K.S. Alagiri, met with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge in Bengaluru to express their wish for Alagiri’s continuation until the conclusion of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Although the DMK-Congress political alliance in Tamil Nadu is expected to secure all 39 Lok Sabha seats in the state, the party leadership seems cautious and is considering the prospect of replacing Alagiri with a more vibrant and dynamic leader like Senthil, who hails from the Dalit community.
