Khara Pongal is a very old traditional recipe. This is easy and super healthy food. Khara portal is one of the most popular in South India. For the Sankranti festival this is one of the main dishes. Portal can be prepared for two styles one is spicy and another is sweet. Here I am sharing only khara pongal for this pongal festival. When you feel the aroma of pongal automatically water comes out of the mouth.
For pongal, the main ingredients are rice and moong dal. Pongal tempering is also very simple and quick to prepare. Pongal doesn’t need many ingredients. We need to separately cook the rice and dal. Otherwise it will take too much time. For tempering I used desi ghee instead of oil. Ghee gives more flavour to the pongal. Instead grated coconut I put the coconut pieces. It will be a great feeling when you chew the pongal. Always put the crushed pepper to get more flavour from them.
For night most of the time I will prepare pongal or kichdi. Because it is super easy and healthy. For working women or bachelors this can be a great recipe. It is a less time consuming recipe and no more ingredients and mainly no need for any side dishes. Pongal is one of the time saver recipes.
This is not prepared only at home, many temples are doing this pongal. This is a completely vegan recipe. Here I have not added onion and garlic so on normal days or any occasion we can try this khara pongal. Apart from this pongal is one pot meal and protein rich food. It can be served any day.
My suggestion is while making the portal recipe take equal quantities or ratio of rice and dal. Otherwise you will not get the exact Taste and traditional taste of pongal. You can use any type of rice for doing the pongal. Dal can be used directly but roasting for a few minutes is a good option for getting more taste.
Serve when it is hot with some ghee on top. Try this healthy and nutritious one pot meal. I am overwhelmed by each person for coming here and catching up my recipes.
