Kolkata : A devastating fire engulfed a slum on the southern outskirts of Kolkata on Sunday afternoon, leaving over 60 shanties gutted in its wake. While no lives were lost, the residents of the affected area have been left with nothing as the blaze consumed their belongings.
Initial investigations point to the cause of the fire being a triggering LPG cylinder explosion, leading to subsequent blasts within the vicinity. Sanjay Mukhopadhyay, Director General of West Bengal Fire Services, confirmed that the fire has been successfully contained, thanks to the swift response of firefighters who worked tirelessly to prevent further spread.
Mala Roy, Trinamool Congress MP and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) chairman, has assured that the focus of the administration is on the speedy rehabilitation and resettlement of those displaced by the fire. With Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee closely monitoring the situation, plans for a comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation package are underway to aid the affected residents in rebuilding their lives.
