Pidi Payasam | Malabar Eid Special

Pidi Payasam is a traditional Kerala sweet dumpling dessert recipe made with rice flour, coconut. Just like Kerala has innumerable biryani varying from cities to district, likewise holds true for the payasams and pradhamans. Also called as Pidi Kari Payasam / Pidi Curry is prepared during Eid and Bakrid.

Actually I am not from the malabar region, when I heard of this recipe from my husband, I got quite excited and interested. He is from malabar region of kerala. He explained this recipe and showed more interest in preparing the recipe. After eating this payasam, I’m surely in love with it. Therefore I want to share the pidi payasam recipe with you in detail.

Pidi payasam doesn’t need much ingredients. All ingredients are easily available in our regular kitchen pantry. Main items are rice flour, any kind of sweet and coconut with its milk. Malabar region is famous for its coconut and most of them use coconut in their recipes. As in this recipe follows freshly grated coconut and coconut milk. The recipe is very interesting and takes little time to prepare.

For pidi payasam, rice flour must be prepared like a dough. Dough is simple with rice flour, salt and hot water. Kneaded well like a chapathi dough. Hot water will help to make soft dough. We need to make pidi from dough. Pidi is not a big task to prepare, it is just shaped like a kidney bean. This recipe needs little time to prepare pidi.

I have used jaggery for sweetness. You can also use sugar too. Thin coconut milk is added when jaggery dissolves and while boiling it for a few minutes, later add pidi and cook for 15 minutes or until pidi is cooked. Freshly grated coconut and cardamom powder gives good aroma to the payasam. Thick coconut milk giving extra taste to the dessert. The dessert pidi payasam can be served when it’s hot or chilled.

Try this tasty payasam and enjoy with your family. Thank you guys for catching up my recipes. Stay in touch for the next recipe.
