Pulmonary fibrosis- Know its causes, symptoms and cure

Pulmonary fibrosis is a condition wherein the lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred, leading to thickened and stiffened lungs, making breathing more difficult. Primarily affecting older adults, especially between ages 50 and 70, it is more commonly diagnosed in men than women. Certain underlying conditions, like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and autoimmune disorders, can increase the risk of developing pulmonary fibrosis.

Unfortunately, healthcare providers consider pulmonary fibrosis a terminal illness as it progressively worsens over time with no known cure, ultimately leading to death. Common symptoms include dyspnea (shortness of breath), dry cough, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, aching muscles and joints, and clubbing of the fingers or toes.

Several factors increase the risk of pulmonary fibrosis, including male biological sex, smoking, and occupational exposure to dust or fumes, such as in farming, ranching, hairdressing, stone cutting/polishing, and metalworking.

While there is no cure for pulmonary fibrosis, some home remedies might help alleviate discomfort and potentially prevent complications:

  1. Baking soda: A tablespoon of baking soda powder mixed with a glass of water before meals can provide relief from discomfort caused by pulmonary fibrosis.
  2. Hydration: Staying properly hydrated is essential as it aids in flushing toxins from the body and can protect against various diseases.
  3. Citrus fruits: Vitamin C-rich citrus fruits like oranges and lemons can stimulate the production of White Blood Cells (WBCs), which help reduce lung inflammation associated with pulmonary fibrosis.
  4. Green leafy vegetables: Including kale, spinach, turnip greens, and other green leafy vegetables in the diet can help reduce inflammation due to their vitamin C content.

Please note that while these home remedies might offer some relief, they do not cure pulmonary fibrosis. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of this condition, it is crucial to seek medical attention and follow the advice of healthcare professionals.
