Punjab Police Registers FIR in Farmer’s Death on Haryana Border

New Delhi: Inspector General of Police Sukhchain Singh Gill announced on Thursday that the Punjab Police have registered an FIR into the tragic death of farmer Shubhkaran Singh, who lost his life last week during a protest on the Punjab-Haryana border.

The decision to file a zero FIR came following legal advice, and Shubhkaran Singh’s funeral is scheduled for later on Thursday. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has also pledged a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family, along with offering Shubhkaran’s sister a constable job in the Punjab Police as per the family’s wishes.

Expressing solidarity with the grieving family, Gill affirmed, “We stand by his family and will do everything to support them.”

Shubhkaran, aged 21, tragically lost his life during the farmers’ protest at the Khanauri border. Farmer leaders had insisted that the postmortem and cremation would not proceed until the Punjab government registered an FIR against Haryana Police officials.

Charanjit Singh, the victim’s father, emphasized the importance of justice over monetary compensation, stating, “Money doesn’t matter to us, justice does.” In his complaint, he recounted how a bullet fired from the Haryana side struck Shubhkaran in the head as he walked ahead.

Following consent from farmer leaders and the family, the postmortem was conducted on Wednesday night, marking a step forward in seeking accountability for the tragic incident.
