Tamil Nadu Government Mulls Extending Reservation to Muslim Converts

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced on Thursday that the state government will review a proposal to extend reservation benefits to members of the Backward Class, Most Backward Class, and denotified communities who have embraced Islam.

Stalin made this statement in response to a request put forth by MMK leader M.H. Jawaharullah during the Assembly session.

Acknowledging the issue raised, the Chief Minister assured that the government will seek advice from legal experts and take necessary actions accordingly.

Jawaharullah had earlier highlighted the lack of reservation benefits for individuals from the aforementioned communities who have converted to Islam.

Stalin reiterated the government’s commitment to uplift the social, economic, and educational status of various communities, including Adi Dravidar, Backward Class, Most Backward Class, and denotified communities. He affirmed that the government will give due consideration to Jawaharullah’s request, similar to the efforts made to safeguard the interests of these marginalized groups.
