Tanzania: In a devastating incident, at least 21 miners lost their lives and several others remain missing after a gold mine collapsed in northern Tanzania’s Simiyu Region. The collapse, triggered by a heavy downpour, occurred at 5:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, as reported by Yahaya Nawanda, the regional commissioner of Simiyu Region.
Nawanda, speaking to news agency, revealed that the exact number of miners buried in the collapse has yet to be determined. Ongoing heavy rains are complicating rescue efforts to retrieve additional bodies suspected to be trapped in the collapsed mine in Bariadi District.
“Rescue work has been stopped for some time because of the rains,” stated Nawanda, highlighting the challenging conditions faced by rescue teams in the aftermath of this tragic event.
