New Delhi: The lumpy skin disease (LSD) situation in Delhi remains under control, with low severity and no reported deaths among affected cattle, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) said on Sunday.
The department reviewed the situation with Delhi’s Animal Husbandry authorities, focusing on vaccination, surveillance, treatment and measures to prevent further spread of the viral disease.
Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr Naveena B. Maheswarappa reviewed the situation on September 13 and stressed the need for sustained vaccination, active surveillance and timely disease-control measures.
As of September 13, around 584 active cases were being reported in Delhi. According to the department, cases were mainly among unvaccinated and vulnerable animals, including cattle with co-morbidities, poor nutritional status or those under stress.
LSD is currently sporadic in Delhi, with affected animals showing good recovery and low disease severity. No mortality has been reported so far, the DAHD said.
More than 45,950 animals have been vaccinated against LSD in Delhi during 2026. Vaccination and other control measures are continuing.
The DAHD has advised Delhi authorities to work closely with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), gaushalas and other stakeholders, particularly for vaccination and management of stray cattle.
The measures include isolation of infected animals, vector control, disinfection and sanitisation, besides strengthening biosecurity. The department has also advised establishing physical check-posts across neighbouring states to regulate animal movement and reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Technical guidance has been provided to Delhi authorities on vaccination, treatment and animal management.
The department also called for wider awareness campaigns involving animal owners, local representatives, NGOs, schools and other stakeholders to encourage vaccination and promote better animal-husbandry practices.
DAHD said it would continue coordinating with states and Union Territories and closely monitor the LSD situation across the country, providing technical assistance for prevention, control and containment of the disease.
